Education Reform in the Comoros Islands
We evaluated a nationwide education program Dubai Cares had implemented in the Comoros Islands from 2008 – 2012. The objectives of the program had been to scale up an education reform nationwide (Competency Based Approach), reduce gender disparities of children in school and increase access to renovated Koranic preschools (ECD).

We worked with the Jordan Education Initiative and the UN Global e-Schools and Communities Initiative to assess technology options for ICTs in schools, assessing the benefits and costs of different technology options.

AMERICAS, COLOMBIA
CREATING EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN CARTAGENA
We developed strategies to restore livelihoods for those most affected by the implementation of a new Bus Rapid Transit system in Cartagena called Transcaribe. The strategies we developed will help to transition up to 5,000 vulnerable workers to stable employment.

UBSOF – Quality education India development impact bond
Dalberg is working with UBS Optimus Foundation, BAT, MSDF and Tata Trusts on the design and performance management of the “Quality Education India” Development Impact Bond. Dalberg identified the most suitable NGOs, designed the financing model and coordinated different stakeholders. Dalberg designed a performance management framework and will be working with NGOs to diagnose potential challenges in interventions, and is planning to develop recommendations around addressing those challenges

Increasing employment opportunities for women in Southeast Asia through ICT
We analyzed interventions that leverage ICT for female participation in the workforce. We recommended investments to a foundation which could help over 20 million women in Southeast Asia begin and remain productive in their work.

Supporting the expansion of educate girls
We supported Educate Girls to identify a new country to expand its program to and developed a high-level roadmap for expansion. We helped the NGO to increase its beneficiary base to improve enrolment and retention outcomes in a new country.

LATIN AMERICA
Launching a corporate leadership program for Inter-American Development Bank
We supported the Inter-American Development Bank to launch a corporate leadership program that helps leading companies in Latin America and the Caribbean develop and implement sustainable bottom of the pyramid business lines.

AFGHANISTAN
Spurring employment and development in Afghanistan
We developed sector specific strategies to determine how the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development could meaningfully engage in Kabul and 6 provinces in North-Eastern Afghanistan, to spur economic development and employment generation.

The impact of investments on education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa
We demonstrated how impact investment can support the growth and integration of education systems in sub-Saharan Africa. The report details the impact of private investment across students, providers, governments and investors.

EL SALVADOR
Attracting private investment in El Salvador
We developed a strategy to attract private investment in El Salvador using the tools of Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) Compact with the country. The Compact between MCC and the government of El Salvador focuses on investing in regulatory reforms, education, and logistical infrastructure.

GLOBAL
The global opportunity in Online Outsourcing
We studied the potential of online outsourcing to be an innovative channel for socioeconomic development by raising youth employment, service exports and participation in the digital economy. We assessed country readiness, the unique role of governments and the real experiences of online workers through individual profiles.

Developing a hygiene intervention in urban schools in Mumbai
We helped a design firm develop and evaluate their hygiene intervention in government-run urban schools in Mumbai. We developed communication tools to facilitate partnerships with large multinationals that have an interest in boosting good hygiene practices among low-income communities in Mumbai.

Advancing college success for low-income youth in America
To advance college success for low-income youth in America, we researched the main challenges and opportunities students face. We developed a strategy to inform program and operational activities for Better Make Room and Reach Higher — Michelle Obama’s initiatives for higher education

The first development impact bond fund for education in India
We designed and launched the first Development Impact Bond Fund to improve the quality of primary school education in India. We identified the most suitable education organizations, designed a financing mechanism, and coordinated negotiations and responsibilities of the fund consortium.

Commercial due diligence of a private secondary school chain
We conducted commercial due diligence of a private secondary school chain for middle income households. We assessed their marketing strategy, positioning, the socio-economic profile of parents and relevant supply/demand factors, alongside identifying key market trends and establishing financial benchmarks for expansion.

Designing and launching a Billion Dollar fund for primary education
We developed a funding strategy for a 1 billion USD facility to accelerate universal primary education. We identified key barriers and interventions opportunities, conducted due diligence and advised on funding opportunities. Our cross-functional team also supported organizational setup, governance and external stakeholder engagement.

High youth unemployment is one of the biggest problems confronting societies around the world – and especially acute for young people in developing countries. We created a website to lay out the landscape of challenges and related solutions in the youth unemployment ecosystem.

RWANDA
Generating employment opportunities for youth in Rwanda
We worked with the MasterCard Foundation to create employment opportunities for youth and support the transition of the Rwandan economy by expanding economic opportunities in the hospitality value chain and developing ICT skills among youth.

Launching a Pan-African youth employment peer learning network
To address the lack of coordination amongst youth employment organizations in Africa, we collaborated with the Umsizi Fund to bring together some of the most demand-driven youth employment organizations into a peer learning network.

AFRICA
Economic opportunities for youth
We mapped economic opportunities for youth in Benin, Mozambique, Rwanda, Zambia, Tanzania, DRC, and Cambodia as part of the United Nations Capital Development Fund’s YouthStart Global Programme. We identified partners that were best placed to develop and run programs that address the challenges of youth unemployment.

AFRICA
Developing an e-learning platform
We worked with Mercy Corps to support an end-to-end e-learning platform start-up to grow and create impact across Africa. We determined the market opportunity for the platform, and prioritized four growth drivers: content focus, pricing models and bundled offerings, advertising, and licensing.

GLOBAL
Designing and implementing a funding and financing framework for global education
Dalberg supported GPE to design and implement an innovative new funding and financing framework that would enable GPE to much more effectively deliver on its strategy. We led analysis and extensive stakeholder consultations that led to GPE’s Board approving changes to increase the efficacy of its core funding model, while also launching new financing mechanisms to support innovation, global advocacy and blended financing for global education.

SOUTH AFRICA
Launching the first social impact bond in South Africa
We worked with mothers2mothers to bring to market the Impact Bond Innovation Fund – a first-of-its kind outcomes based financing mechanism for Early Childhood Development in South Africa with a target fund size of 48 million ZAR for its Cape Town pilot.

NIGERIA
Tackling youth unemployment in Nigeria
We assessed the effect of policy on financial inclusion in Nigeria through interviews with over 50 stakeholders from commercial and microfinance banks, mobile operators, and enabling institutions such as card companies and regulators. The resulting report bolstered advocacy efforts to increase access to financial services

NIGERIA
Transforming senior secondary education in Nigeria
We conducted a study focusing on transforming senior secondary education in Nigeria. We explored on the implications of the adoption of the new technical and vocational curriculum across Nigeria. We reviewed the state of the vocational curriculum rollout across Nigeria through visits and interviews with stakeholders in 6 states, and identified opportunities for Ford Foundation and others to intervene.
