Assessing Potential Demand for Buy-Down facility
We assessed the potential demand for financing from a planned Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Buy-Down Facility. Our work gave Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and IsDB an indication of which low income and lower-middle-income OIC countries are most likely to seek financing from the Buy-Down Facility.

MENA
Strategic Planning Advisory Support for The Mastercard Foundation
We developed a report on key macroeconomic trends across Africa for the MasterCard Foundation. The report analyzed macroeconomic trends at a sectoral and country level and included profiled the economies of a set of African countries including Egypt and Morocco.

NIGERIA
Supporting the formation of the fund for agricultural finance in Nigeria
We designed and launched the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN): a $100 million private equity fund for small- and mid-sized enterprises to accelerate Nigerian agricultural development. To date, FAFIN has received $66 million in funding.

ASIA
Sasakawa Peace Foundation – Asia women’s impact fund strategy
Dalberg Global Development Advisors was appointed by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) to conduct an initial market assessment of the landscape of gender lens investing in Asia and Theory of Change for the Women’s Impact Fund, a USD 100 million impact investment fund that aims to increase positive gender outcomes in Asia. NIGERIA
KFW – design and structuring of the fund for agricultural finance in Nigeria
Dalberg designed and helped launch the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN) on behalf of KfW and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The fund concept emerged from an assessment study of the Nigerian agricultural finance market by Dalberg, where we found the biggest gap in growth capital for small and mid-sized enterprises.

GLOBAL
Government of Canada & World Economic Forum – Convergence Platform Development
Dalberg designed and launched Convergence, the world’s first blended finance platform that helps public and private investors connect to execute transactions in emerging and frontier markets. Convergence includes an investor match-making platform, grant funding for the design of innovative new financing products, and knowledge tools to build investors’ understanding and ability to utilize blended finance

SENEGAL
Launching the Senegal women’s investment club
We designed and launched a commercially-oriented investment platform where women can learn from one another. The Senegal Women’s Investment Club is the first initiative in the region to mobilize exclusively female investment into a broad portfolio that over time will bridge the gender finance gap by supporting women-led businesses.

AFRICA
AFDB – Design and structuring of the fund for energy inclusion
Dalberg designed and structured a $500 m African Development Bank (AfDB) debt facility to support the scaling of renewable energy providers. Dalberg advised on market positioning and capital structure of the facility, management structure, and domiciliation, and supported the fundraising and fund manager recruitment processes. The facility was designed to provide support to off-grid companies and to small-scale power producers. AfDB’s board subsequently made a $100 m commitment to the facility.

ECUADOR
Supporting FINCA Ecuador’s growth
We worked with microfinance organization FINCA Ecuador to identify, evaluate and recommend effective strategies to remain competitive and expand its portfolio. FINCA Ecuador provides access to socially responsible financial services that allow low-income communities and individuals to invest in their future.

AFGHANISTAN
Assessing an agricultural investment strategy
We assessed the agricultural investment strategy of a major foreign government presence in Afghanistan, with an active portfolio of 1.15 billion USD. We evaluated the interventions currently funded, analyzed impact to date and future potential, and determined a balanced portfolio moving forward.

AFRICA
Structuring a 500 million USD facility for energy inclusion
We designed and structured the African Development Bank’s 500 million USD Facility for Energy Inclusion to support renewable energy access continent-wide through off-grid solar, mini-grid and small independent power producers. The FEI is expected to catalyze energy access for an estimated 3 million people.

SRI LANKA
Structuring a small and medium-size enterprise venture capital fund
We structured a small and medium-size enterprise venture capital fund and designed a bond issuance to support the plantation industry in Sri Lanka. We assessed the demand for seed and expansion capital among SMEs and made recommendations on the structuring of the fund.

AFRICA
Establishing a Cassava financing facility
We established a cassava financing facility in Ghana, Nigeria and Mozambique to provide access to finance to processors in the cassava value chain. We identified a pipeline of primary processors to be invested and potential partners, and designed a financing facility

Designing a $24 billion agricultural transformation strategy
We worked with the African Development Bank to design a ten-year, continent-wide agricultural transformation strategy.

GLOBAL
Expanding the movement of women funding women and girls
We collaborated with Women Moving Millions to develop a ‘call to action’ report that serves to define and expand the movement of women funding women and girls.

INDIA
Developing a roadmap to invest in healthcare in India
We helped USAID to develop a roadmap to invest in healthcare in India. We identified three key priorities for their investments: strengthen the financing landscape for health, engage the private sectors to improve health outcomes, and support innovative products, technologies, processes and business models.

AFRICA, ASIA
Developing the scope of a water and sanitation fund
After assessing the commercial and impact investment potential of the water and sanitation market in low and middle-income countries, we recommended to Private Infrastructure Development Group the establishment of a new fund. We identified opportunities for the fund in 14 countries across Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Sizing the market potential for water and sanitation infrastructure in low and low/middle-income countries
We supported the World Bank’s Private Infrastructure Development Group to size the commercial market potential for water and sanitation infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries, identify opportunities and develop investment strategies

Social Venture Fund Manager – Fund strategy
Dalberg supported a Social Venture Fund Manager in refining their strategy and developing pitch materials for a new global impact investing fund to be presented to their board and other LPs, before going into the market for fundraising. The fund is currently investing in India, Brazil, and East Africa with a focus on unmet consumer needs in emerging markets.

EAST AFRICA
Omidyar & Dutch Good Growth Fund – SGB segmentation study
Dalberg developed a segmentation framework of SGBs and formal SMEs in frontier and emerging markets. Dalberg conducted a supply- and demand-side literature review, held over 50+ interviews with a variety of financial service providers, including debt, equity, and mezzanine investors, conducted a workshop at Sankalp, and conducted human-centered-design research in Mumbai to better understand how behavioral traits affect external financing needs.

EAST AFRICA, SOUTH-EAST ASIA
Creating an impact investment strategy to increase access to energy
We supported the impact investment strategy for a US-based family office to address financing gaps in energy access value chains in South Asia and East Africa.

AFGHANISTAN
Spurring employment and development in Afghanistan
We developed sector specific strategies to determine how the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development could meaningfully engage in Kabul and 6 provinces in North-Eastern Afghanistan, to spur economic development and employment generation.

Developing a five-year strategic plan for a pension scheme
We worked with a pension scheme to develop a 5-year strategic plan, including analysis of past performance, financial modelling to decide strategic asset allocations, investment decisions and performance indicators, workshops for priority alignment, and benchmarking.

Developing a five-year strategy for an East African investment group
We developed a detailed 5-year strategy for a leading East African investment group. We reviewed past performance, conducted an opportunity analysis, facilitated workshops with senior management, and advised on structuring challenges, investment strategy and organizational capabilities.

The impact of investments on education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa
We demonstrated how impact investment can support the growth and integration of education systems in sub-Saharan Africa. The report details the impact of private investment across students, providers, governments and investors.

Supporting c/can 2025: City cancer challenge
We produced a publication with the UICC detailing why cities should invest in cancer treatment and how city leaders can leverage new sources of finance to fund the infrastructure. The report was launched at Davos, the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting

AFRICA, ASIA
GIIN – West Africa and South Asia impact investing market mapping
Dalberg created a database of impact investments in India, segmented investors based on impact intent and measure impact, and co-authored a comprehensive landscape report detailing the key trends and challenges in the sector from the supply-side and demand-side, and in the ecosystem. The final report was disseminated by the GIIN and Dalberg at various international fora, and is being used as a public resource published on the GIIN website, directed towards financial institutions, impact enterprises, policy-makers, and the general public.

EL SALVADOR
Attracting private investment in El Salvador
We developed a strategy to attract private investment in El Salvador using the tools of Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) Compact with the country. The Compact between MCC and the government of El Salvador focuses on investing in regulatory reforms, education, and logistical infrastructure.

MEXICO
FMO – Evaluation of Accion Frontier Investment Fund (AFIF)
Dalberg evaluate FMO’s investment in Accion Frontier Investment Fund (AFIF) at three levels: FMO’s investment in AFIF, AFIF’s investment into portfolio companies, and the portfolio companies’ impact on small businesses. Dalberg analyzed the landscape of fintech innovations in Mexico, South Africa and India, interviewed key stakeholders to distil key learning, and undertook a quantitative and qualitative survey of end users. The evaluation will be used by FMO to inform its fintech strategy going forward and to share learnings and impact with the broader audience.

INDIA
Studying inclusive businesses in India and Sri Lanka
We conducted a market scoping study of the inclusive business sector in India and Sri Lanka to understand how lack of debt and equity finance is limiting businesses’ growth and impact. We made recommendations on the design of a proposed Asian Development Bank inclusive business private equity fund.

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
Due diligence and valuation of a Telecom player
We conducted a rapid commercial due diligence and valuation of a telecom player with a portfolio of 4G LTE spectrum across 14 countries. We used multiple technical valuation approaches, including proprietary modelling tailored to the Sub-Saharan African context.

GLOBAL
Impact investment mandate for a family foundation
We were the dedicated investment manager to a family foundation focused on agribusiness, renewable energy and waste management in Africa and Southeast Asia. We supported the definition of their impact investing strategy and led the execution of their investments

INDIA
The first development impact bond fund for education in India
We designed and launched the first Development Impact Bond Fund to improve the quality of primary school education in India. We identified the most suitable education organizations, designed a financing mechanism, and coordinated negotiations and responsibilities of the fund consortium.

GLOBAL
Facilitating a merger of three consumer goods companies
We facilitated the merging of three consumer goods companies by conducting financial valuations, analyzing historical performance and projecting future value with and without consolidation. Our recommendations were accompanied by communications plans and a 100-day post-merger implementation plan to guide execution.

UGANDA
Extending energy access to rural and underserved areas in Uganda
We identified suitable pilot and financing partners to extend energy access to more rural, underserved areas in Uganda. We engaged energy providers and financiers in the country to understand incentives structures that can increase access to energy.

GLOBAL
Designing a funding mechanism for hypertension interventions
We designed an intervention to address hypertension (high blood pressure) in low- and middle-income countries. We selected three cities to pilot the intervention, and recommended a financing approach whereby a coalition of strategic private sector actors demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of an integrated approach to combating hypertension.

Designing and launching a Billion Dollar fund for primary education
We developed a funding strategy for a 1 billion USD facility to accelerate universal primary education. We identified key barriers and interventions opportunities, conducted due diligence and advised on funding opportunities. Our cross-functional team also supported organizational setup, governance and external stakeholder engagement.

GLOBAL
Reviewing the feasibility of a development impact bond for population services international
We examined Population Services International’s portfolio of health interventions for suitability for creating a Development Impact Bond (DIB). We articulated the value proposition of DIBs, identified investors and outcome payers, created assessment criteria, and selected five interventions best suited for a DIB.

GLOBAL
Accelerating the financing of critical healthcare commodities
We supported a multi-donor trust fund focused on reproductive, maternal and child health to design and launch a Commodities Credit Facility that accelerates the financing and provision of critical healthcare commodities in developing countries.

MOZAMBIQUE
Designing and implementing a performance based Malaria Bond
We partnered with a private-sector coalition to design, issue, and implement the Mozambique Malaria Performance Bond on behalf of the government of Mozambique. The bond will increase funding for, and the efficiency of, malaria interventions through a pay-for-performance mechanism.

SOUTH AFRICA
Launching the first social impact bond in South Africa
We worked with mothers2mothers to bring to market the Impact Bond Innovation Fund – a first-of-its kind outcomes based financing mechanism for Early Childhood Development in South Africa with a target fund size of 48 million ZAR for its Cape Town pilot.

GLOBAL
New Report: Financing Sustainable City Cancer Treatment Infrastructure

We designed and implemented Convergence, a platform that brings together public, philanthropic and private investors for blended finance investments in emerging and frontier markets. Convergence is incorporated in Toronto, Canada and has secured 18.5 million USD in catalytic funding.
