Supporting the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s Demand Management & Improved Productivity program
We helped the MCC to source innovative technologies to achieve sustainable use of scarce water resources for smallholder farmers in four interior governorates across Central and Southern Tunisia.

AFRICA
How can we design bundled digital services to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers?
Dalberg has been supporting Mercy Corps’ AgriFin Accelerate program to design and launch the DigiFarm platform with Safaricom and multiple partners (Arifu, iProcure, FarmDrive) in a multi-staged engagement. DigiFarm is a mobile-based platform aimed at increasing digital financial and non-financial services for smallholder farmers in Kenya.

NIGERIA
Supporting the formation of the fund for agricultural finance in Nigeria
We designed and launched the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN): a $100 million private equity fund for small- and mid-sized enterprises to accelerate Nigerian agricultural development. To date, FAFIN has received $66 million in funding.

GLOBAL
Creating a strategy to invest in ICT4AG
We helped a leading foundation invest in ICT4Ag solutions to support smallholders and catalyze agricultural transformation. We created an analytical framework to assess the landscape, analyzed trends and opportunities in the sector, and built a pipeline of investment opportunities.

WEST AFRICA
IFC – Agriculture value chain investment opportunity scan
Dalberg supported the IFC to carry out a mapping and a competitiveness analysis of six agricultural value chains (coffee, cocoa, cashew, palm oil, cotton and livestock) as well as inputs, in selected countries in East and West Africa. The Dalberg team undertook extensive primary and secondary data collection and analysis to map the value chains, assess their competitiveness through establishing regional and international benchmarks, and recommended specific investment and advisory opportunities

NIGERIA
KFW – design and structuring of the fund for agricultural finance in Nigeria
Dalberg designed and helped launch the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN) on behalf of KfW and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The fund concept emerged from an assessment study of the Nigerian agricultural finance market by Dalberg, where we found the biggest gap in growth capital for small and mid-sized enterprises.

GLOBAL
Direct-to-farmer finance innovation spaces playbook
We led collaborative research, design and ideation with the Initiative for Smallholder Finance to explore innovative models for direct-to-farmer finance providers to better serve smallholder farmers. Based on engagement with farmers, donors and providers, we identified five breakthrough opportunities for innovation.

AFGHANISTAN
Assessing an agricultural investment strategy
We assessed the agricultural investment strategy of a major foreign government presence in Afghanistan, with an active portfolio of 1.15 billion USD. We evaluated the interventions currently funded, analyzed impact to date and future potential, and determined a balanced portfolio moving forward.

KENYA
Surveying smallholder tea farmers’ responses to frost mitigation
As part of USAID and NASA’s SERVIR initiative, we conducted a survey of 425 smallholder tea farmers in Kericho and Nandi Hills, Kenya, to examine their current behavior towards frost mitigation and response, and their perceptions as to the potential value of frost monitoring technology.

GHANA, KENYA
How would farmers measure the impact of financial solutions
We worked with the Rural and Agricultural Finance Learning Lab to better understand the impact of agricultural finance on farmers in Ghana and Kenya. We undertook in-depth interviews with farmers to understand their perspectives on success to inform future approaches to measuring impact.

AFRICA, KENYA
Examining international value chains
We partnered with the World Bank on their flagship project on international agriculture value chains in Kenya, Ghana and Zambia. We interviewed value chain actors, food processors, government institutions and over 600 farmers to examine the impact of scheme arrangements and discuss supply chains.

SRI LANKA
Structuring a small and medium-size enterprise venture capital fund
We structured a small and medium-size enterprise venture capital fund and designed a bond issuance to support the plantation industry in Sri Lanka. We assessed the demand for seed and expansion capital among SMEs and made recommendations on the structuring of the fund.

ETHIOPIA
Creating an organizational strategy for Ethiopian agricultural transformation agency
We developed the first organizational strategy for the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency, with a focus on internal structure, talent development and retention, and a transition plan to become a fully Ethiopian team within five years as part of an ambitious growth plan.

Establishing a Cassava financing facility
We established a cassava financing facility in Ghana, Nigeria and Mozambique to provide access to finance to processors in the cassava value chain. We identified a pipeline of primary processors to be invested and potential partners, and designed a financing facility

AFRICA
Designing a $24 billion agricultural transformation strategy
We worked with the African Development Bank to design a ten-year, continent-wide agricultural transformation strategy.

AFRICA
Evaluating two agricultural inventions in Sub-Saharan Africa
We evaluated the income and nutrition related impact of the two interventions in selected agricultural clusters in Benin, Mali, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania. We interviewed a totally of 4,800 farmers of a specific crop.

GLOBAL
Impact investment mandate for a family foundation
We were the dedicated investment manager to a family foundation focused on agribusiness, renewable energy and waste management in Africa and Southeast Asia. We supported the definition of their impact investing strategy and led the execution of their investments

Integrating gender into an agricultural portfolio
We developed a strategy to integrate gender-responsive interventions across the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s agricultural portfolio. We articulated the investment case for gender-responsive interventions and created a strategic framework for identifying key gender constraints at each step along the agricultural value chain.

TANZANIA
Transforming public sector agriculture interventions in Tanzania
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided a first-of-its-kind grant to Dalberg to drive cultural change within the public sector agricultural system of Tanzania, with the target of launching more effective and efficient ways of doing business.

ETHIOPIA, KENYA, RWANDA, TANZANIA, UGANDA
Conducting the World Bank’s global value chain survey
We conducted the World Bank’s Global Value Chain (GVC) Survey in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Ethiopia. We interviewed around 45 businesses in agriculture and apparel in each country on the inputs needed to create an enabling environment for local goods and services suppliers to participate in GVCs

KENYA
Interviewing 2,800 farmers to evaluate Plantwise Clinics
We conducted a survey across 14 counties in Kenya to evaluate Plantwise clinics, which diagnose plant health problems. We evaluated the local sources of information on soil fertility and plant diseases, and listed over 5,600 farmers across 300 locations in Kenya, interviewing 2,800 of them.

BANGLADESH
Studying the rice market in Bangladesh
We completed a value chain study of the Bangladeshi rice market for GAIN, with the aim of increasing 55 million households access to nutrient fortified rice. We assessed four nutritious rice concepts and developed a full business case for the most commercially viable intervention.

KENYA
Studying smallholder farmers’ use of financial services in Kenya
We conducted a benchmark study for Mercy Corps on the use of financial services by smallholder farmers in Kenya who live on under $2.5 a day. The research focused on the pain points that prevent them from achieving financial health, and their current uses and perceptions of technology.

SENEGAL
New offerings and business models for financial inclusion
Dalberg partnered with CGAP and myAgro to conduct research, ideation and prototyping across Senegal to understand smallholder farmers’ unmet needs, prioritize new product propositions and design and prototype new solutions.

TANZANIA
Customizing digital credit for smallholder farmers in Tanzania
We explored the causes of smallholder farmers’ low uptake in digital credit in Tanzania by using an HCD approach. Based on our findings, we designed and prototyped a new digital credit product for smallholder farmers and evaluated their response to it.

NIGERIA
Launching the Rockefeller Foundation Cassava Innovation Challenge
We designed, launched and managed the Rockefeller Foundation Cassava Innovation Challenge, together with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture. The challenge offered up to 1 million USD in funding to novel solutions that can increase the shelf life of cassava in Nigeria.

GUINEA
Facilitating the delivery unit for the Prime Minister of Guinea
We designed and launched the delivery unit for the Prime Minister of Guinea to improve delivery of key government initiatives. We are running pilot projects in agriculture, mining and governance as well as a leadership initiative to build capacity within relevant government institutions.
