We evaluated a nationwide education program Dubai Cares had implemented in the Comoros Islands from 2008 – 2012. The objectives of the program had been to scale up an education reform nationwide (Competency Based Approach), reduce gender disparities of children in school and increase access to renovated Koranic preschools (ECD).

Increasing employment opportunities for women in Southeast Asia through ICT
We analyzed interventions that leverage ICT for female participation in the workforce. We recommended investments to a foundation which could help over 20 million women in Southeast Asia begin and remain productive in their work.

Increasing access to off-grid solar energy in Indonesia

Developing the scope of a water and sanitation fund
After assessing the commercial and impact investment potential of the water and sanitation market in low and middle-income countries, we recommended to Private Infrastructure Development Group the establishment of a new fund. We identified opportunities for the fund in 14 countries across Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Developing a market entry strategy for global biotechnology company
Dalberg was engaged by a global biotechnology company to develop a market entry strategy into emerging markets including Latin America, Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa.

We worked with the Millennium Challenge Corporation to guide its investment strategy and deployment of a fund to address challenges in the Moroccan education system. We developed sector specific strategies to determine how the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development could meaningfully engage in Kabul and 6 provinces in North-Eastern Afghanistan, to spur economic development and employment generation.

Developing a five-year strategic plan for a pension scheme
We worked with a pension scheme to develop a 5-year strategic plan, including analysis of past performance, financial modelling to decide strategic asset allocations, investment decisions and performance indicators, workshops for priority alignment, and benchmarking.

Bringing sustainable sanitation services to towns across India
We worked with CEPT University in India to bring sustainable and equitable sanitation services to small and medium towns in India. We worked closely with city governments and the private sector to implement a performance based contract for sanitation services.

NIGERIA
Reducing neonatal mortality by increasing the use of chlorhexidine
We designed a toolkit to engage the private sector and communities to increase use of chlorhexidine – an antiseptic which reduces neonatal mortality. We explored barriers and opportunities related to behavior change through interviews, home and clinic visits and professional workshops.

EL SALVADOR
Attracting private investment in El Salvador
We developed a strategy to attract private investment in El Salvador using the tools of Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) Compact with the country. The Compact between MCC and the government of El Salvador focuses on investing in regulatory reforms, education, and logistical infrastructure.

KENYA
Identifying innovative business models for direct-to-farmer financing
We conducted primary research with smallholder farmers and facilitated a multi-stakeholder system mapping and design lab to identify innovative business models for direct-to-farmer financing. We also created an innovation agenda for future product development investment.

The global opportunity in Online Outsourcing
We studied the potential of online outsourcing to be an innovative channel for socioeconomic development by raising youth employment, service exports and participation in the digital economy. We assessed country readiness, the unique role of governments and the real experiences of online workers through individual profiles.

Developing a hygiene intervention in urban schools in Mumbai
We helped a design firm develop and evaluate their hygiene intervention in government-run urban schools in Mumbai. We developed communication tools to facilitate partnerships with large multinationals that have an interest in boosting good hygiene practices among low-income communities in Mumbai.

Scaling up the sanitation and safe water for all program
We provided strategic insights on successes, lessons learnt, and recommendations to assist the scale up of the Sanitation and Safe Water for All program, a first-of-its-kind market transformation program in the water and sanitation sector by the International Finance Corporation in Kenya.

Advancing college success for low-income youth in America
To advance college success for low-income youth in America, we researched the main challenges and opportunities students face. We developed a strategy to inform program and operational activities for Better Make Room and Reach Higher — Michelle Obama’s initiatives for higher education

Smart practices that enhance the resilience of migrants
We supported the International Federation of the Red Cross to identify smart practices in service provision to migrants, outlining 59 smart practices and 13 operational enablers that address migrant needs and help enable effective operations.

Catalyst for growth
We piloted the SME Catalyst for Growth program with the JPMorgan Chase Foundation in 2012 to provide high-quality business development support to 20 South African SMEs. This pilot program grew into a non-profit which provides an analytics platform for business development support providers serving SMEs in South Africa.

Supporting Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry to accelerate economic growth
We supported Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry in identifying high-potential sectors that could serve as engines for the country’s economic growth, and allow them to meet the government’s ambitious five-year growth and transformation targets.

Integrating gender into an agricultural portfolio
We developed a strategy to integrate gender-responsive interventions across the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s agricultural portfolio. We articulated the investment case for gender-responsive interventions and created a strategic framework for identifying key gender constraints at each step along the agricultural value chain.

Designing and launching a Billion Dollar fund for primary education
We developed a funding strategy for a 1 billion USD facility to accelerate universal primary education. We identified key barriers and interventions opportunities, conducted due diligence and advised on funding opportunities. Our cross-functional team also supported organizational setup, governance and external stakeholder engagement.

LATIN AMERICA
Promoting growth of SMES in Latin America and the Caribbean
We designed a strategy for the Inter-American Investment Corporation to promote growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in Latin America and the Caribbean. We developed a market assessment of needs and gaps in financing SMEs in the region, and engaged key private sector players.

COLOMBIA
Designing a pro-poor subsidy for public transportation in Bogota
We worked with the World Bank to design a pro-poor subsidy for public transportation in Bogota to expand access for lower income residents. We developed a detailed subsidy design, based on our analysis of global best practices, emerging technology solutions, and spatial distribution of trip makers.

Creating a strategy for access to appropriate pricing for vaccines
We worked with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to ensure access to appropriate vaccine pricing for countries transitioning away from the organization’s support. We recommended a payment mechanism to provide pre-financing to countries to procure vaccines on a need basis.

AFRICA
Economic opportunities for youth
We mapped economic opportunities for youth in Benin, Mozambique, Rwanda, Zambia, Tanzania, DRC, and Cambodia as part of the United Nations Capital Development Fund’s YouthStart Global Programme. We identified partners that were best placed to develop and run programs that address the challenges of youth unemployment.

GLOBAL
Designing and implementing a funding and financing framework for global education
Dalberg supported GPE to design and implement an innovative new funding and financing framework that would enable GPE to much more effectively deliver on its strategy. We led analysis and extensive stakeholder consultations that led to GPE’s Board approving changes to increase the efficacy of its core funding model, while also launching new financing mechanisms to support innovation, global advocacy and blended financing for global education.

Developing a strategic plan for the Center for Reproductive Rights
We supported the Center for Reproductive Rights to develop its five-year strategic plan by identifying key trends, challenges, and opportunities in the reproductive rights landscape and facilitating workshops to help the Center define its vision and core activities.

INDONESIA
Developing branchless banking infrastructure in Indonesia
In partnership with frog design and BTPN bank, we created a new bottom of the pyramid financial service offering using branchless banking infrastructure that is currently being piloted for roll-out and scale-up in Indonesia.

AUSTRALIA
Protecting the great barrier reef
We produced a report with the WWF demonstrating the economic importance of the Great Barrier Reef as it faces increased threats from coastline industrialization. Our research presented undeniable reason for governments, businesses and investors to consider the welfare of the reef in future development.

CENTRAL AMERICA
Scaling access to clean cooking solutions in Central America
We supported the World Bank and the governments of Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua in scaling and reaching universal access to clean cooking solutions by developing a roadmap and investment prospectus for the 2015-2019.

AFRICA

We supported the WHO AFRO’s transformation agenda to improve its efficacy, accountability and responsiveness in dealing with health situations in the continent, and realign organizational structure with strategic priorities. Defining the process of institutionalizing deworming programs
We helped CIFF define and understand the process of institutionalizing deworming programs. We created a framework to evaluate the institutionalization of deworming programs, and to signal the potential sustainability of the project after the funding cycle has ended.

GUINEA
Facilitating the delivery unit for the Prime Minister of Guinea
We designed and launched the delivery unit for the Prime Minister of Guinea to improve delivery of key government initiatives. We are running pilot projects in agriculture, mining and governance as well as a leadership initiative to build capacity within relevant government institutions.

Launching the one billion coalition for resilience campaign
We supported the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to launch the ‘One Billion Coalition for Resilience Campaign,’ a campaign seeking to increase community resilience to adversity, for example through increased preparedness for natural disasters.

Evaluating the refugee resettlement process
In collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Resettlement Service, we undertook an end-to-end evaluation of existing resettlement processes. We developed targeted recommendations to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, integrity, quality, and refugee experience of the service.

MYANMAR
Designing a mini grid partnership facility in Myanmar
Currently 30% of Myanmar is electrified, with over 30 million people having no access to power. The government has set a goal of 100% electrification rate by 2030.

SENEGAL
Developing the city of Dakar’s resilience strategy
As a strategy partner to 100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, we helped the City of Dakar develop its resilience strategy, implementing an inclusive governance strategy to enable the city to better manage future shocks and on-going stresses.

NIGERIA
Tackling youth unemployment in Nigeria
We assessed the effect of policy on financial inclusion in Nigeria through interviews with over 50 stakeholders from commercial and microfinance banks, mobile operators, and enabling institutions such as card companies and regulators. The resulting report bolstered advocacy efforts to increase access to financial services

NIGERIA
Transforming senior secondary education in Nigeria
We conducted a study focusing on transforming senior secondary education in Nigeria. We explored on the implications of the adoption of the new technical and vocational curriculum across Nigeria. We reviewed the state of the vocational curriculum rollout across Nigeria through visits and interviews with stakeholders in 6 states, and identified opportunities for Ford Foundation and others to intervene.
